I’m Sofía, a Uruguayan textile artist and maker based in London. My practice explores visual expression, storytelling and craft through needle felting and mixed media techniques. I create joyful, playful soft pieces- wall hangings and sculptures- drawing inspiration from nature, childhood memories, daily life, and play. My work aims to evoke smiles while encouraging a reconnection with one's inner child and the visual world. The pieces I make explore a variety of natural materials and fibres, many of which come from the gardening world, including coconut coir liner rolls, wool, jute mats, raffia and flax.
My family in Uruguay owns a garden centre, so gardens have always been a source of inspiration and creativity for me. As a child, my imaginary friends, Flopi and Pio, lived in the garden—in a bush—and I would spend hours playing outdoors with them.
The materials I use connect me to that same genuine and spontaneous creativity of childhood, as well as to my family. I see the pieces I create as gardens in their own right—some sculptural, some two-dimensional. But for all of them, I nurture, grow, and cherish them. With patience, love, and hard work, they come to life. And once finished, they are there to be enjoyed, bringing joy to people’s lives.
